Last night we did another batch of stone crab, cooking the rest in the bag. We have left overs, but we wanted to get them cooked. A couple years ago we lost a batch in the freezer by waiting too long. Still, these from Shelly's are just much fresher than those we bought before.
Elizabeth took all the left over veggies and beans and blended them into a fine soup. It was so good. Too bad we could never duplicate that recipe. She fixed up the left over squash as well. What a great feast.
I talked to Jacky yesterday for quite a while and she is planning on being here the first week in February. We will hope to see her soon after that. It was a good conversation. She seemed chipper and in good spirits. The radiation has not had many side effects, just exhaustion.
This morning the frigity seems to have lifted. I woke up at 3 AM but I can still use the Florida room. Nice. Hopefully, the house managers come to look at the oven today to see if they can manage to get it up and going again and to teach us how to do that as well.
Well, we got a lesson in how to make the oven do what we want even if the display is missing. Great! Works for me. We just hit "bake" and then punch in the temp numbers.
I went to the flea market where I found some cheap treasures and thankfully passed up a ton of cheap stuff I don't really need. One woman even had cups for a dime.
For a dollar each I bought two more hemostats for removing fish hooks, small ones that are bluegill size. I used to think it was a bargain if I could get these for $3. For $2 I bought a ceramic dog for my dresser that holds wallet and keys and such. It is in the shape of a Dashshund. I have three of them now. I got my first one when I was a kid and my Uncle Charlie loved his and bought me one for my birthday. I got the second shopping at a flea with one of my sons. I just can't remember the details. I rarely see them. Perhaps I'll leave this one at Orford, or perhaps I'll have a third one on my dresser.
The flea market was packed. It sells all small things. Tons of kitchen junk. All sorts of other things. Lots of guns. It is so easy to buy a gun. I heard a vendor talking about what they need to see to sell one and telling that there are plenty of guys who don't bother with any of that documentation. Creepy.
I did not buy books, records, or fishing gear. Sadly, I have all I need, probably for my life. Well, I'll still buy books when I see exactly what I want.
I also bought a $1 tee shirt that will be another shirt I do not have to worry about at supper time. I should have packed some of my stained shirts on this trip. I use the bibs when we go out, but at home I like to eat bib free.
I stopped at Walmarts. I rarely shop there at home, but here it is one of the few places near here to buy what I want. I bought a new shirt and two pair of $11 jeans that fit me but will need to have the legs shortened. I can't seem to find any pants with legs short enough. At Penny's I tried on 29 inch seams and they were too long. Strange. Strange too was the size of the pants I bought. I have a 48 inch waist. But these jeans I bought are 44 inch waist with a note that they are meant to be worn just below the waist. Hip-hop pants I guess. Well, they will do me for a while. Also, found a bit more food items and an extention cord.
We walked at sunset and Elizabeth did get her first no-see-um bite and has ice on it. Too bad. We thought this was bug free, but it just bug sparse. We walked in the neighborhood and actually ended up finding a back way into the Terra Vista gated community dog walk. We met a fellow named Chuck there from Minnesota visiting his children and had a fine and friendly talk. He is a corn and soybean farmer on a huge farm in Minnesota. He was a friendly fellow. At the end of the path in the Terra Vista community there is a large pond and a fine fountain. It was a good walk except for one bug.
Going out on this moonless night, the sky was filled with stars and it was very quiet so there were the stars and the sounds of the crickets and pick black.
It seems our mid February move will be effortless. We can even move over a few days if we want. Nice. No worries. After our move down here, that will be a relief.
Elizabeth cooked up some of the chicken breasts and left over brown rice and collards with the last of the cherry tomatoes. Nice supper. I am waiting for the very slow dish washer to finish a load before cleanup time with a little Dean Martin in the background.
I guess I won't go gambling tomorrow. It promises to be a warm day and we may head out to the pool again. Mornings have still be uncomfortable here. Odd. And once the sun is up, we throw open the doors as it is warmer outside than inside.
